Choosing a thermometer for your child

Little Wins editorial · Presentation updated October 12, 2026.

Start with your child’s age and the measurement method. Features come second.

Quick Answer

Age matters. According to the AAP, rectal readings are most accurate for infants under 3 months. Ear thermometers are for children 6 months and older. Follow the device instructions, and ask your clinician to show you the right method.

Three Practical Steps

  1. Start with your child’s age and your household’s needs before comparing features.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s current instructions, cleaning guidance, and any age restrictions.
  3. Choose one useful feature for your routine and review the linked product information before buying.

A digital stick thermometer

Vicks SpeedRead V912

Useful features: The manufacturer lists oral, rectal, and underarm use, a color display, waterproof cleaning, and an approximately eight-second measurement.

Consider before buying: Technique and measurement site matter. Keep rectal and oral thermometers separate and clearly labeled. Underarm measurements are less accurate.

Our take: a simple format for an age-appropriate measurement method, chosen with your clinician’s guidance. Display colors do not replace medical assessment.

An ear thermometer for ages 6 months and up

Braun ThermoScan 7 IRT6520

Useful features: Age-based color coding, a positioning indicator, and disposable lens filters are practical features listed by Braun.

Consider before buying: Lens filters need replacing, and correct ear positioning matters. AAP guidance advises against ear thermometers below 6 months.

Our take: worth considering for families who prefer the ear method for older babies and children; not our suggestion for checking a newborn’s temperature.

A thermometer reads temperature. It does not diagnose illness.

Call your pediatrician immediately if a baby 3 months old or younger has a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, even without other symptoms. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing or unresponsiveness. Do not wait for a product purchase to get help.

Record the actual number, the method used, and the time. Keep a rectal-use thermometer clearly labeled and separate from one used orally.
