Baby Names
How do we choose a baby name we both like?
Turn a long list into a conversation about what matters.
Quick Answer
Turn a long list into a conversation about what matters.

Make separate shortlists first
Each person can choose five names before comparing lists. Note why you like them: meaning, a family connection, sound, or a favorite spelling. Agree which considerations matter most. A shared list is easier to discuss when each person has a chance to explain a preference without immediately defending it.
Try the name in ordinary use
Say the first and last names together, write the initials, and think about likely nicknames. Consider pronunciation across languages used in your family. You do not need to eliminate every possible joke or predict your child’s personality. If a spelling is unfamiliar, decide whether explaining it feels comfortable to you.
Use rankings as inspiration
The Social Security Administration publishes U.S. name statistics by birth year; a ranking describes popularity rather than quality. Our Baby Names page separates official favorites from trend inspiration and offers curated name ideas. Save a few possibilities, take a break, and come back. You can love a popular name or choose something rarely used.
