A calm, checklist-guided morning

Pick one difficult moment

Ask whether finding clothes, starting a task, or changing activities is the hardest part. Use one example from yesterday rather than declaring that mornings are always bad. AAP’s organization guidance describes predictable routines and manageable task lists as possible supports. The exact setup still needs to fit the child, the caregiver, and the home.

Try an original three-step plan

For example: get dressed, eat breakfast, collect the bag. Put supplies where each action happens. Show one step at a time if a full checklist feels overwhelming. Ask whether pictures, written words, a spoken cue, or company help most. Optional tools should solve a specific difficulty; a purchase is not necessary to begin.

Check whether the plan helps

Try the setup for a few mornings and ask what felt easier. If a timer creates pressure, remove it. If a step needs adult help, include that help instead of marking the child as unsuccessful. Everyday planning suggestions do not replace an individualized ADHD care plan. Bring ongoing problems to your child’s care team and school when appropriate.
